Infant and Adolescent Hip Disorder Program

Our orthopaedic surgeons provide comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for newborns, infants, children and adolescents with congenital or developmental hip disorders. A multidisciplinary team led by highly experienced orthopaedic surgeons offers customized treatment plans tailored to the specific needs of each child.
Pediatric-trained orthopaedic surgeons offer expertise in adolescent hip conditions requiring hip reconstructive surgery to prevent premature osteoarthritis. The CHOC Orthopaedic team provides consultations and treatment for hip problems of any complexity and offers onsite ultrasound diagnostics and physical therapy services.

Hip Disorder Treatment Options
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) in Infants and Children
Nonsurgical treatment options include: Pavlik harness, hip abduction orthosis (cruiser brace), hip arthrograms, spica casting
Surgical options: redirectional osteotomies (Salter Innominate osteotomy,) reshaping osteotomies (Dega, Pemberton, San Diego,) femoral osteotomy and shelf arthroplasty
Adolescent Hip Dysplasia
Surgical options: redirectional osteotomies (Salter Innominate osteotomy,) triple innominate osteotomy, Ganz- Periacetabular osteotomy, Chiari osteotomy, femoral osteotomy, shelf arthroplasty, and hip arthroplasty for debridement and repair of labrum and chondral injuries
Legg-Calve-Perthes (LCP)
Nonsurgical treatment options: bracing , Petrie casts and/or physical therapy
Surgical options: redirectional osteotomies (Salter Innominate osteotomy,) triple innominate osteotomy, proximal femoral osteotomy, shelf arthroplasty and joint distraction via external fixation
Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE)
Surgical options: in situ screw fixation, open reduction-internal fixation, proximal femoral osteotomy, femoral neck osteoplasty via surgical hip dislocation
Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
Surgical options: osteoplasty, trochanteric arthroplasty, femoral neck osteoplasty via surgical dislocation of the hip
Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Adolescent Hip
Nonsurgical treatment options: crutches, systematic treatment and physical therapy
Surgical options: core decompression, femoral and pelvic osteotomy
Idiopathic Chondrolysis
Nonsurgical treatment options include: crutches and physical therapy
Surgical options: joint distraction via external fixation and resurfacing arthroplasty
