Child life specialists provide CHOC Children’s patients and families with support that makes hospital visits less stressful for all.
Child Life Specialists and Heart Surgery
When patients come for their preoperative testing, a child life specialist helps keep the child at ease during tests and helps to explain procedures that may be scary or confusing for the child by using books, toys and actual medical equipment and language that is developmentally appropriate for the patient. On the day of surgery, child life specialists in the Tidwell Procedure Center provide patients with distractions and activities and can even escort the child into the operating room and stay by their side while they drift to sleep. Child Life in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
Once in our state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, child life specialists support the patient and his or her caregivers and siblings by providing guidance on what to expect as the patient recovers. Specialists also bring the child activities, toys and movies while in bed and help motivate children who may be reluctant to get out of bed after their procedure. Child life specialists even work with our tiniest infants to make sure they get the stimulation they needs while family members are not able to be with them. In short, our child life specialists help kids stay kids while at CHOC.
