Deciding where a child will undergo heart surgery is one of the biggest decisions a parent can make. At CHOC Children's our specially trained pediatric experts in the Tidwell Procedure Center and Heart Institute work with patients and their caregivers to provide the top quality, compassionate care.
Housed on the third floor of CHOC’s new Bill Holmes Tower, the Heart Institute is steps away from the hospital’s impressive offering of surgical services in the Tidwell Procedure Center that include dedicated state-of-the-art cardiovascular operating rooms featuring the latest heart-lung bypass technology.
The CHOC Children's Heart Institute’s surgical team includes pediatrics-trained congenital surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, among others with surgical specialties in the latest techniques to repair congenital heart defects in patients of all ages—from adolescents to low-birth-weight newborns. In fact, thanks to our prenatal cardiodiagnostic services, we are able to identify congenital heart lesions before birth in order to provide heart repair as early as possible. We have performed open-heart surgery in premature infants weighing as little as 1.4 kg.
After surgery, most patients will recover in our Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, which features state-of-the-art monitoring and lifesaving equipment and expert staff trained to work with pediatric cardiology patients. Once a patient is ready to go home, our cardiac nurse practitioner will coordinate discharge planning and provide education about what to expect during recuperation at home.
