Sometimes, babies have problems with vision. These problems may be due to a birth defect, or may be caused by the effects of prematurity, neurological problems, genetic disorders, and/or other diseases.

Early detection and treatment of eye disorders in children is crucial to prevent interruption of visual development, which may be irreversible where treatment is delayed.

Important risk factors that may be associated with ocular disease, including maternal infections while pregnant, premature birth, deafness and congenital heart disease.
