Physician / Researcher Bio

Afshin Aminian, M.D., has worked at CHOC Children's since 2003 as a board certified orthopedic surgeon and director of the hospital's orthopedic institute. Dr. Aminian earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine. He did his general surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and his pediatric orthopedic fellowship at San Diego Children's Hospital. Dr. Aminian's clinical interests include scoliosis surgery and treating spinal deformities in children. He is affiliated with the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and the Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Aminian is board certified with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His philosophy of care is to promote better Orthopedic care for children. He is specifically interested in Pediatric Hip Deformities, Scoliosis, and Sports Medicine. Dr. Aminian also speaks Farsi.

Research

Dr. Aminian is currently looking for innovative ways to surgically correct spinal deformities with an international team of researchers. Furthering his interest in treating scoliosis, Dr. Aminian is looking at prospective outcome studies on surgical patients with teen idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). He is also assessing surgical correction in relationship to patient outcome in radiographic parameters. In a canine study, he is assessing intraarticular enzymatic injections for Hurler’s Syndrome.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aminian has presented at numerous conferences and meetings in the United States and abroad. Most recently, he gave three presentations at the 17th International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques in Toronto. He did one presentation on the influence of surgical correction on thoracic hypokyphosis on sagittal spinal pelvic parameters in AIS, a second presentation on the correction of AIS via posterior medial derotational maneuver, and a third on thoracic kyphosis and sagittal pelvic parameters in AIS.
