Physician / Researcher Bio

Member of the St. Joseph Hospital Nasal and Sinus Center, Dr. Gillman specializes in the treatment and management of childhood asthma and allergies. He is board certified in pediatrics and in allergy, asthma and immunology. He has expertise in caring for food and bee sensitivities and in minimizing the impact of allergies on school performance. Additionally, he serves as medical director of the annual summer camp for asthmatic children sponsored by the American Lung Association. Dr. Gillman received his fellowship training at LA County/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles and completed his medical training, internship and residency through the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago.

Dr. Gillman’s clinical interests include all allergic disorders, especially those that are gastrointestinal or of the epidermis or have to do with foods or insects. He is also very interested in the development of new drugs and therapies that can help treat those with allergies. He is dedicated to developing better standard therapies for pediatric patients.

Research

Since 1972, Dr. Gillman has been involved in approximately 80 asthma research projects and more than 20 studies relating to allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, urticaria, and atopic dermatitis. Dr. Gillman is actively involved as principal investigator and sub-investigator in the evaluation of safety and efficacy of both adult and pediatric asthma and allergy medication for pharmaceutical companies. He is currently collaborating with his colleagues in CHOC’s allergy, asthma, and immunology division and physicians in the gastroenterology division on a study of anti–interleukin-5 in the treatment of children with eosinophile esophagitis. He is also collaborating with his allergy, asthma, and immunology division colleagues to test anti–interleukin-5 on asthma patients and the drug Xolair.

During his career, Dr. Gillman has been published in journals including the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, the Journal of Pediatrics, the Annals of Allergy, Clinical Pediatrics, and the Allergy and Asthma Proceedings. He has presented lectures on allergic rhinitis internationally and his abstracts have been included numerous domestic conferences.
