Bio:
Dr. Buzby received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Penn State University. He completed Postdoctoral Fellowships at Penn State and UCLA before joining the CHOC Research Institute Faculty as an Immune & Inflammatory Disease Research Scientist.
His research focuses on discovering the molecular & cellular mechanisms that regulate inflammation and coagulation in newborn infants. Since the neonatal immune and coagulation systems are not completely mature, newborn infants are often susceptible to life-threatening complications of severe infection or injury. Identifying genetic vulnerabilities may allow us to protect those newborn infants at risk for such infectious or bleeding complications.
The goal of this research is to find answers to the following questions:
-
What immunological traits are unique to newborn infants & young children?
-
How do these traits contribute to inflammatory disease?
-
How can this immunological knowledge be applied to discovering new therapeutic treatments for these childhood diseases?
