Bio:
Dr. Shirley Williams received her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship to study the effects and delivery of antisense oligonucleotides in the Cancer Research Laboratory at Children?s Hospital of Orange County. She continued working as a Scientist at CHOC in the Hematology Research Laboratory and has recently been involved in the establishment of the Center for Genetic Analysis and Molecular Medicine in the CHOC Research Institute.
Research Interests:
We all have very similar DNA, but it is the small changes that make us unique and more or less susceptible to disease. I am studying these changes in the DNA using microarray technology to develop innovative theories about normal and diseased states, especially in autoimmune diseases such as ITP. This analysis can identify new risk factors for diseases and help to determine the optimal treatment.
