What should I keep in mind when choosing toys and/or supplies to donate to CHOC?
Although our patients receive gifts during the holidays and for their birthdays, many of the donated items are given as rewards following a painful procedure or used in our playrooms and at the patient’s bedside throughout the year. Items made of fabric and wood are not accepted as they cannot be cleaned or used repeatedly by our patients. Durable, manageable sized toys are most appropriate. Please adhere to our Wish List for items we accept.
Where, when and how do I deliver my donation?
Due to construction, CHOC is unable to accommodate the delivery of toys and other donations at our main hospital campus during the busy holiday season. We still need the community’s support, though! We are hosting a CHOC toy drive on Saturday, December 17th, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at our Employee Parking Lot. We ask that all donations be dropped off on this day only. (click here for a map)
Please see CHOCO’S Wish List for items we accept. Due to construction, our storage space is limited. In lieu of toy donations, we strongly encourage donors to consider giving gift cards.
Please contact the Child Life Department at (714) 509-4519 with any questions.
What donations are most helpful?
Gift cards to stores such as Toys R Us, Target, Walmart and Michael’s Craft Store are most helpful. This allows us to purchase the exact items needed for our patients and alleviates the need for excess storage space. This also helps avoid receiving items that cannot be used in the hospital setting.
Can I order items online?
Yes. Donors can conveniently order from our Wish List on www.amazon.com Under the Wish List section search for Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Toys listed here are ones that we find most popular with our patients.
Do you only need toys during the holidays?
No. Although we receive the majority of our toys during the month of December, we need toys all year long. We strongly encourage donors to consider delivering toys at other times of the year to assure plenty all year long.
What about used toys?
We are unable to accept used items due to infection control and the safety of our patients.
Are donations tax deductible?
All donations will be receipted for your tax purposes. If you deliver your donation to the information desk, please complete the “Gift In Kind” form and keep the top copy for your records. You will also receive a tax information sheet at that time.
May I deliver my gift directly to the patients?
We apologize, but because of concerns for patient confidentiality and infection control, our donors are not permitted to visit our patients.
Will someone pick up my donation?
Due to staffing and transportation limitations, CHOC is not able to pick up your donation. Donations may be mailed to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, 1201 W. La Veta Ave., Orange, CA 92868.
May I donate sporting or other event tickets to patients and families?
We welcome ticket donations as least one week in advance of the event. The Child Life Department will distribute the tickets to the families. Please call 714-509-8473 to make arrangements. Please note, due to patient confidentiality tickets should be sent to the Child Life Department for distribution to families. Patient names cannot be given for “will call” pick up.
May I come perform for the patients?
Due to hospital policy we only allow professional groups over the age of 18 to perform. Please call the Child Life Department at 714-509-7995 to discuss if you are eligible.
May I donate food and/or candy to the patients?
Due to dietary restrictions, we do not allow food donations.
